Last week two of my most fashionable friends brought up fur vests and it made me think about my own opinion on them as a cool weather staple. As another fall season is upon us, fur vests are available all over. A great layering piece, the fur vest will definitely keep you warm in chilly weather. But with so many styles available, at so many price points, how do you find the right one? On top of that, just how do you wear it?

Here are some quick tips on how to choose and style a faux fur vest:
– By nature, the fur vest is a chunky, statement making piece. Whatever color fur you choose, you’ll want to make sure to keep the rest of your outfit simple. A long tunic or t-shirt over a pair of leggings or skinny jeans is a great foundation for bold outerwear. In cool weather, you want to keep warm, but save bulky layers for another outfit. Fur will only add to your silhouette.
– Choose the right length for your body-type. Sure, the long faux fur vest by Rachel Zoe looks chic on the model, but at 5’4″, the vest would probably be knee-length or below on me. Longer vests are great on taller frames, and even better with a pair of heeled ankle boots. If you are on the shorter side, go for a vest that hits at the waist or above. I love the length of this Velvet by Graham & Spencer Faux Fur Vest. Almost cropped, and perfectly paired with a long, sleek top.
– Whatever color and style you choose, since the fabric is synthetic, you’ll want to make sure the faux fur is of good quality. Personally, I prefer fur that has one or two similar tones in it, like the Natalie Faux Fur Vest by Sanctuary, that my one of my friends found online. Though, this Alice + Olivia Spotted Faux Fur Vest is pretty fabulous, with it’s contrasting colors.
What do you think? Will you be wearing a faux fur vest this fall and winter?
