Brr! Temps are dropping and coats are moving from the back of the closet to the front. What styles are you gravitating toward this winter? Here in the Pacific Northwest, I’ve had frost on my car each morning for the past week, so when it comes to coats, the warmer, the better! While short coats, like little leather moto jackets are a closet mainstay, you’ll probably want more coverage to keep your body warm in the wind. Here are for coats that will get you through winter in style:
The Cape: Seen all over the runways, capes are a chic way to cover up. The Via Spiga Asymmetrical Zip Cape ($95) has a bit of faux leather trim. Love it paired with tall boots and jeans or leggings. Depending on how cold it is, you can wear anything under a cape, from a tissue-weight tee to a cashmere sweater.
The Puffer: Ideal for those really cold mornings when there is an icy chill in the air, J Crew’s Wintress Puffer Coat ($248) keeps you cozy in goosedown. With a cinched in silhouette, this puffer is anything but bulky. In this style, I prefer black, but the grey is also a go-with-anything basic. Bonus! The Parka: On my shopping list since last year, parkas are still going strong this season. Totally versatile, they pair well with casual items as well as little dresses. The French Connection Military Moment Parka Coat ($248) hits at mid-thigh, offering plenty of coverage. It also has a fully-removable inner lining, nice for when the weather doesn’t want to declare a direction.
The Wool Coat: This classic shape never goes out of style, it just keeps getting better and better each season. Go for a neutral, like Calvin Klein’s Basket Weave Belted Wool Coat ($129) or experiment with a pop of color like red or blue. Either way, a wool coat will keep your look pulled together while keeping you warm. This one is a little shorter, but you could also go for some more drama with a longer version.
Another cool-weather favorite, especially around the holidays, is a faux fur coat. Like wearing a mini-blanket, only way more chic. And, they look as good with a jeans and heels as with a cocktail dress!
